Put Them On!: Rashida Jones, Janelle Monae and Slut Shaming

Last Saturday, Rashida Jones, actress and daughter of Quincy, hopped on Twitter to express her frustration with a trend she notcied among female celebrities.

Right after I saw those tweets, I got into an argument with someone over Janelle Monae. According to that person, Janelle Monae the second coming of black jesus because of her talent and her uniform because she isn’t as sensual as her counterparts. Her music has never been my cup of tea but I do agree that she is talented. However, I get extremely annoyed when people insinuate that she’s automatically better than artists like Beyoncé and Lady Gaga because she isn’t dropping her thun thun thun in a mini skirt. That is the same annoyance I felt when I read these tweets. I know Rashida and the Janelle fan have good intentions but I can’t fully agree with them.

There isn’t anything wrong with selling sex. The problem is sex seems to be the only thing that is being sold and THAT is wrong. The Janelle fan expressed their displeasure at Janelle presumably being less famous than Bey or Gaga because she chooses to cover up and that is a problem. Female artists that choose a different style of dress or music should be just as celebrated as artists that bare it all and stick to pop music. It perfectly fine to bob your head to Q.U.E.E.N. but get your life from Rihanna’s Pour It Up video.

Janelle ain't hurting that bad for support....

The Janelle Monaes and Chrisette Micheles of the world deserve more shine but slut shaming other artists isn’t the way to get them that attention. Janelle is doing the damn thing right now so do what you can to support her endeavors. Buy her music and go to her shows. If you’re a Chrisette fan, go to YouTube and make sure her new series gets views. If there is any other artist out there that you think needs more buzz,  support them. Better yet, put me on to them so they could possibly get some ANA shine.

If you have someone you think I should check out, leave me some info in the comments section!
